Tips for a Strong Password
Passwords are the key to the front door of the digital world. With so much valuable data that could be stolen or compromised, you need to treat passwords like they’re a physical key to your business. Unwanted intruders in your digital space can cause just as much trouble, if not more, than an intruder physically breaking into your business. Here are some digital security tips for having a strong password:
Don’t make it easy to guess/common. Most people know to avoid choosing “password” or “12345”, but personal details that are well known are a no-go as well. Whether it’s the name of your dog or a nickname, don’t use something that everyone knows.
Variety is good. There’s a joke online that says, “Sorry, but your password must contain an uppercase letter, a number, a haiku and a hieroglyphic.” While this is extreme, it demonstrates that the more variety your password has, the harder it is to guess, thus increasing its strength. Don’t be afraid to mix symbols, numbers and letters.
Frequently change them. Treat passwords like you treat clothes – change them frequently. While changing them every day would be excessive, once every six months is a good rule to follow.
Use different passwords. You don’t have the same key for everything, why have the same password for everything? Mix up the passwords you use so that way if one of them gets compromised, not all of them are compromised.
